Company was established in 1916, during the First World War, in the place known as Costamasnaga. That's why its first name was "Officine di Costamasnaga". In the beginning, the Company started to specialize on railway wagon production, that became its core business. In 1926, Officine di Costamasnaga became an S.p.A. corporation.
Meanwhile, at several kilometres of distance, a company called IAT S.p.A. was developing its business, through the design and the construction of cranes, handling and transport systems. In 1942, the two companies connected their ideas and IAT S.p.A. was acquired. This acquisition allowed to extend the Company production from railway wagons to cranes and handling equipment. With the purpose to expand its expertise areas, in 1969 Officine di Costamasnaga incorporated Cortassa S.p.A., a company specialised on design and manufacturing of gearboxes.
Thanks to this union, the Company added customized gearboxes, couplings, screw jacks and gears for industrial applications to its production line. A few years later, the gearbox department was spun off as mechanical division located in a new factory, separated from railway division. In the 1997, the railway division became an independent company named Costaferroviaria S.p.A. and Officine di Costamasnaga S.p.A., together with mechanical division were renamed Costamasnaga S.p.A..
Thanks to the acquired visibility and the demonstrated professionalism, the mechanical division became an independent company named Costameccanica S.p.A. A serious financial crisis affected the group, forcing Costameccanica to closed down in April 2002. Nowadays, Costameccanica is still alive as Power Transmission Europe SA.
